Where to go
London's specialty scene is spread across the city. Here is how the geography breaks down.
Hackney / Shoreditch
The original heartland. Industrial roastery aesthetic, high-turnover lots.
Roasters: Dark Arts, Climpson & Sons
Bermondsey / London Bridge
Artisan producer strip. Borough Market proximity raises the food culture bar.
Roasters: Assembly, Monmouth (Borough)
Fitzrovia / Marylebone
Central London quality without the tourist premium.
Roasters: Kiss the Hippo, Workshop
Clerkenwell / EC1
Design and media crowd; high coffee literacy in the audience.
Roasters: Workshop, Ozone
Richmond
Unexpected stronghold. Kiss the Hippo's flagship is here.
Roasters: Kiss the Hippo
Peckham / South London
Rising scene. Old Spike, Volcano, and others making it worth the trip.
Roasters: Old Spike
City / Canary Wharf
CBD quality has improved dramatically post-2020 and post-Crossrail.
Roasters: Workshop, Kiss the Hippo, Notes
New to specialty coffee in London?
Find your starting point
New to specialty? Start at Monmouth, Caravan, or Ozone — approachable, well-executed, easy to talk to the staff. Want to go straight to the deep end? Walk into Workshop or Kiss the Hippo and ask what they'd recommend off filter.
Ask for a tasting note
"What's the filter coffee today and what does it taste like?" is all you need to say. Every good specialty cafe will talk you through the menu. The staff know the coffee better than anyone.
Know what you like before you walk in
Knowing your taste archetype means you can ask for something specific — "I like bright, washed coffees with high acidity" — and get an instant recommendation rather than a menu you don't know how to read.
