About Notes Coffee Roasters
Notes Coffee Roasters is a London specialty coffee roaster and bar operator with a roastery in East London and 12+ venues across the city. Their tagline — "High Grade Coffee, Sourced From Origin, Lovingly Roasted in East London" — describes a model that keeps sourcing, roasting, and serving under the same organisation.
Notes was founded in 2010 by Robert Robinson and Fabio Ferreira, opening their first bricks-and-mortar shop at St Martin's Lane near Trafalgar Square. The roastery at 2 Blackwall Trading Estate in Poplar (E14) — now operating out of Canning Town — serves a network of cafes and bars concentrated in the City, Canary Wharf, and central London. The model is closer to a coffee-and-wine bar than a traditional specialty cafe: several venues serve alcohol in the evenings alongside their espresso programme, and the Kings Cross location is open until 10pm on weekdays.
For Cuppd users, Notes is particularly interesting as a way to encounter specialty coffee in contexts that aren't purely specialist. Several venues are food-service environments where coffee is served before, after, or alongside a meal — and the quality level holds across all of them.
Roaster profile
Notes occupy a distinct position in the London specialty landscape: they are a genuine roaster-bar hybrid in a way that most "roastery-cafe" brands are not. The evening alcohol service at several venues, the brunch programming, the private event hire — these aren't add-ons to a coffee business; they're an integrated part of what Notes is. That hybrid model gives them access to audiences that a Monday-to-Friday espresso bar would never reach.
The geographic spread of the venue network is also significant. From the Gherkin to Selfridges to Canary Wharf to Kings Cross, Notes have concentrated their sites in the highest-footfall professional and tourism zones in central London. The City professional who discovers Notes at the Bank venue is a different customer from the weekend visitor who finds them at Trafalgar Square or Selfridges. The roastery pipeline needs to support a range broad enough to work across all those contexts.
The sourcing tagline — "High Grade Coffee, Sourced From Origin" — is the clearest public statement of their quality positioning. The Poplar roastery handles all production for the venue network and the wholesale and e-commerce arms, with click-and-collect available directly from the site.
For Cuppd users, logging Notes coffees gives the app useful data about how specialty coffee performs across different brewing contexts and service environments — information that builds a fuller picture of how context affects perception.
