About Redemption Roasters

Redemption Roasters is a London specialty coffee roaster and social enterprise that trains people with criminal records in barista and roasting skills. Founded in 2014, they operate cafes at commercial sites and within prison grounds as training environments, and sell specialty coffee that funds the programme. Their experimental lot range demonstrates that the social mission and genuine specialty quality operate at the same level.

The Redemption model: people affected by the criminal justice system are trained as baristas and roasters. The training happens in operational cafes — some within prison grounds, some at commercial sites around London. The coffee sold through those cafes and online funds the programme. The quality has to be real for the economics to work, which is why Redemption do not rely on the social enterprise angle as cover for mediocre coffee.

Their product range includes a standing espresso blend alongside a rotating experimental lot programme — anoxic naturals, extended fermentation washed coffees, carbonic maceration lots. The Mugoyi Anoxic Natural from Burundi is the clearest example of where the experimental work sits.

Roaster profile

Redemption's founding structure parallels Old Spike's in one key way: both organisations treat the social mission as the reason the coffee business exists, not as a marketing layer applied to a conventional roastery. The operational difference is in focus — Old Spike centres on homelessness, Redemption on the criminal justice system — but the commercial model is similar: high quality coffee as the vehicle, training and employment as the output.

Their pricing transparency is worth noting separately. Product pages state the cost of the coffee and, in some cases, how the margin is split between operations and the social programme. This mirrors Origin Coffee's FOB pricing approach, but applied to the operational side rather than the sourcing side.

The experimental lot programme is genuine rather than decorative. Anoxic naturals require careful fermentation management — oxygen exclusion during fermentation produces a specific lactic-dominant acidity that is quite different from aerobic naturals. Redemption source and produce these lots with the same care as any process-forward London roaster.

For Cuppd users: the Mugoyi Anoxic Natural is the reference lot. It is the most distinctive product in the Redemption range and the clearest demonstration of their quality ceiling. Log it against Scenery Coffee's lacto naturals and you will start to build a useful map of how fermentation method affects cup character.
