About Origin Coffee
Origin Coffee is a UK specialty roaster founded in Cornwall in 2004, known for publishing SCA cupping scores and FOB pricing on their product pages — a level of supply-chain transparency that is rare even in specialty coffee. With cafes in London, Bristol, and Cornwall alongside an SCA-accredited barista school, Origin is the roaster for buyers who want to see the full cost and quality chain behind the cup.
Founded in 2004 in St Ives, Origin were among the first UK roasters to treat specialty coffee as a publishing exercise as much as a product one. Their product pages include SCA cupping scores, FOB pricing, the importer relationship, the altitude and region, and in many cases the specific producer or cooperative. This approach predates the current transparency wave by nearly a decade.
Their range sits firmly in the light, filter-forward register — Kenyan, Ethiopian, Burundian, and Colombian lots dominate the catalogue. Their London cafes bring the Cornwall roasting operation into the city, making them one of the few UK roasters with genuine presence in both markets.
Roaster profile
Origin's FOB pricing publication is the most significant transparency marker. FOB is the price the roaster paid at the port of origin — before shipping, import duties, and domestic processing costs. Publishing it is commercially unusual because it shows exactly how much of the retail bag price is margin. Origin do it anyway, and have done for years.
Their SCA scores — published per lot — are similarly informative. An SCA score above 80 qualifies as specialty; above 85 is considered high quality; above 90 is competition-grade. Origin typically stocks lots in the 84–88 range, which maps to a high-quality specialty band without the competition-lot price premium.
The Cornwall roastery operates alongside a training facility and the UK's first SCA-accredited barista school. If you are interested in coffee education as well as the product, Origin run courses at varying levels from the Cornwall site. The school is open to the public and does not require a prior coffee background.
For Cuppd users, Origin are a useful reference point for understanding how to read a product page. Starting with the Karira Hill Burundian — with its published FOB price and SCA score — and then cross-referencing those numbers against other lots builds a framework for evaluating sourcing claims across the whole market.
