About Scenery Coffee
Scenery Coffee is a London specialty roaster known for writing some of the most detailed flavour and process narratives in UK specialty coffee. Their product pages go beyond tasting notes — they explain the sensory experience of the coffee across brew methods, the fermentation protocols used, and the producer decisions that drove them. The roaster of choice for the process-obsessed coffee drinker.
Scenery operate from East London and have built their identity around depth of communication rather than scale. Where most roasters write three tasting notes, Scenery write three paragraphs. Their product descriptions cover the fermentation protocol (lacto anoxic, extended carbonic maceration, water pillow fermentation), the specific producer or washing station behind the processing decision, and how the method changes the cup across different brew temperatures and methods.
Their range is small by design — typically 4–8 active lots — and focused on coffees where the process is genuinely interesting, not just a label. Lacto-fermented Ethiopians, anoxic Colombian lots, extended-maceration Burundians.
Roaster profile
What distinguishes Scenery from other process-forward London roasters is editorial rigour. They do not describe a coffee as "lacto fermented" without explaining what lacto fermentation means for the cup. The lactic acidity — creamy, yogurt-like, structured — is explained as a consequence of the bacterial environment during fermentation, not just listed as a flavour note.
Their sourcing relationships tend to be at the producer or washing station level rather than through large importers — a model that allows them to work with producers experimenting with new protocols before those experiments reach the broader market. The result is a catalogue that is genuinely ahead of mainstream specialty.
The range is intentionally small. Scenery do not carry a house espresso or a crowd-pleasing natural alongside the experimental lots. Everything in the catalogue is there because the process or the origin is interesting enough to justify the editorial investment they put into each product page.
For Cuppd users: start with the Ethiopia Megadu Lacto Natural. It is the clearest single expression of what Scenery are trying to do — Ethiopian terroir amplified by lactic processing into something that reads like a dessert wine in the cup. Log it with full tasting notes and use those notes as a calibration point when you encounter other lacto-fermented coffees from different roasters.
