About Monmouth Coffee Company

Monmouth Coffee Company is London's oldest specialty coffee roaster, founded in 1978 in Covent Garden. With three locations — Borough Market, Covent Garden, and a Bermondsey roastery — and an intentionally minimal social media presence, Monmouth built their reputation entirely through the quality of what's in the cup.

Founded in 1978, Monmouth predates the very concept of the UK specialty coffee scene. The roastery at Bermondsey (3-4 Dockley Road, SE16) produces fresh coffee delivered daily to the shops. Sourcing is relational and has accumulated over decades — farm visits, estate relationships, and cooperative partnerships that predate most of what the London specialty scene is built on today. The no single-use paper cup policy is the most visible expression of the values: customers must bring a reusable cup or drink in. Monmouth enforces it anyway at one of the busiest coffee queues in London.

For Cuppd users, Monmouth is a foundational roaster to try if you're building a serious understanding of London specialty coffee. Their coffees tend to be well-executed but not stylistically extreme — the priority is clarity and quality rather than novelty. Comparing Monmouth against more experimentally-minded roasters like Dark Arts or Special Guests helps calibrate what "classic" and "contemporary" mean in London specialty coffee.

Roaster profile

Monmouth occupy a unique position in the London specialty hierarchy: they invented it. The farm visits, the direct relationships, the commitment to transparency about where coffee comes from — these weren't concepts Monmouth adopted from the third wave; they were doing versions of them before the third wave had a name. The scene that now surrounds them was, in significant part, built by people who trained at or were inspired by Monmouth's approach.

The no-paper-takeaway-cup policy tells you more about Monmouth than most of their marketing could. It's not a nudge or a preference — it's a firm position enforced in one of the busiest coffee queues in London, at a location that attracts international tourists who may never have encountered this expectation before. The operational cost of that policy is real, and they absorb it.

The sourcing model is built on relationships that precede the specialty coffee boom by years, in some cases by decades. When a roastery says it visits farms and builds long-term partnerships, the claim means something different when the company has been doing it since 1978 than when a five-year-old brand uses the same language.

The intentionally low social media presence is not neglect — it's a choice. Monmouth's reputation has been built entirely through the quality of the coffee and the experience in the room, and they've maintained that approach while the platforms they're not using have come and gone. The Borough Market queue on a Saturday morning is its own marketing.
