Tasting notes

From Climpson & Sons

"Hambella is a natural from the Guji Zone at 1,900–2,200 masl. Heirloom landrace varietals on raised bed natural drying. Strawberry, caramel, and vanilla — a sweeter, rounder natural profile than many Guji lots. The Hambella cooperative draws from smallholder farmers across the zone; quality selection is done at the washing station level."

Cuppd note

Hambella is one of the more accessible natural Ethiopian profiles in the London dataset — where Scenery's Megadu is pushing into lacto-fermentation and tropical extremes, Hambella is the natural Ethiopian you'd recommend to someone encountering the style for the first time. Strawberry, caramel, and vanilla are flavours people already have a reference for.

The altitude (up to 2,200 masl) slows cherry development and concentrates sugar without tipping into fermented intensity. Climpson are one of the community-rooted East London roasters whose reputation was built in the neighbourhood before specialty coffee became a city-wide conversation. Hambella is a perennial in their range rather than a rotating micro-lot — which makes it a reliable first log for a new Cuppd user.

Who it\'s for

Built for: The Indulgent

Strawberry, caramel, and vanilla from a clean natural — warm, sweet, approachable. The natural Ethiopian experience without the process-forward intensity.

Also suits: The Explorer

A good entry point into the Ethiopian natural category. Recognisable flavours, clear origin character, forgiving on various brew methods.

Sweet and clean enough to work beautifully on filter. 3 minutes. The caramel and vanilla come through clearly.

Also great

AeroPress

Good body, warm fruit character. The slight pressure adds density without losing the strawberry note.
